A fine and rare gentleman's undress cap, English, circa 1600. the linen ground embroidered in small running stitches, chain-stitch in green and red silks with coiling vines, sprays of carnations and blossom, enhanced and encircled by raised gold braid heart shaped tendrils, worked over four joined linen gores to form the crown, with upturned hem edging, 18cm, 7in tall Commonly grown flowers and fruits were the most popular subjects for garment embroidery at this time. Similar designs are found in Thomas Trevelyon's pattern books. Undress caps of this style and age are usually in blackwork combined with metallic braid and embroidery - the red and green combination is most unusual. .
